What Is Bazi? A Simple Guide to the Four Pillars of Destiny

What Is Bazi?

Bazi (八字) means "eight characters" in Chinese. It's a system that uses 8 Chinese characters to create a map of your life. It's also called Four Pillars of Destiny because it's based on 4 time pillars from when you were born:

  1. Year Pillar — your connection to the world, family background
  2. Month Pillar — career, relationship with parents
  3. Day Pillar — yourself (Day Master), relationship with partner
  4. Hour Pillar — children, legacy, hidden personality

In Korea, the same system is called Saju (사주) — four pillars. The idea is the same, just the reading style is a little different.

The Five Elements (Wu Xing / 五行)

Every pillar has an element from the Wu Xing system:

  • Wood (木) — growth, creativity, vision
  • Fire (火) — passion, charm, expression
  • Earth (土) — stability, trust, grounding
  • Metal (金) — strength, justice, structure
  • Water (水) — wisdom, flexibility, intuition

These elements work together in two cycles:

Creating Cycle: Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood

Controlling Cycle: Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood

The balance of elements in your chart shows your personality, strengths, and challenges.

Day Master: Who You Really Are

The Day Master (日主) is the main character in your Day Pillar — it represents the real you. There are 10 types:

| Day Master | Element | Personality | |---|---|---| | 甲 Jia | Yang Wood | Big tree — leader, strong, visionary | | 乙 Yi | Yin Wood | Vine — flexible, diplomatic | | 丙 Bing | Yang Fire | Sun — charming, warm, positive | | 丁 Ding | Yin Fire | Candle — intuitive, caring, detailed | | 戊 Wu | Yang Earth | Mountain — stable, reliable, protective | | 己 Ji | Yin Earth | Garden — nurturing, practical, adaptive | | 庚 Geng | Yang Metal | Sword — decisive, fair, strong-willed | | 辛 Xin | Yin Metal | Jewel — elegant, precise, perceptive | | 壬 Ren | Yang Water | Ocean — ambitious, wise, free | | 癸 Gui | Yin Water | Rain — persistent, deep, intuitive |

Yong Shen: The Element You Need Most

Yong Shen (用神) is the most important concept in Bazi — it's the element your chart needs most to find balance. Think of it as a "prescription" for your chart.

If your Day Master is too strong, the Yong Shen weakens it. If too weak, the Yong Shen makes it stronger. Knowing your Yong Shen helps you pick the best colors, directions, careers, and timing.

Why Bazi Is More Accurate Than Your Zodiac Sign

Western zodiac only looks at where the sun was when you were born — this means 1/12 of the world has the same "forecast." Bazi uses your year, month, day, AND hour of birth — creating tens of thousands of unique combinations.

But even Bazi alone isn't complete. That's why LumiSaju combines Bazi with 3 other systems: Nine Star Ki, Numerology, and Western Astrology. When all systems agree about something, you know it's real.
