What Is Wu Xing?
Wu Xing (五行) literally means "five movements" or "five phases." These are not just physical elements — they are five types of energy that continuously move, interact, and transform. In Bazi, every Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch carries a specific element, and the distribution of elements in your chart describes who you are.
Each element exists in two polarities: Yang (active, expansive) and Yin (passive, receptive). So there are actually 10 variations — which then become the 10 Day Masters.
1. Wood Element (Mu)
Wood Personality
People with dominant Wood element are like trees — always growing, flexible yet strong, and deeply rooted. They are visionaries who always look ahead.
Yang Wood (Jia) is like a big tree: firm in stance, ambitious, a natural leader, but sometimes stubborn.
Yin Wood (Yi) is like a climbing vine: adaptive, creative, diplomatic, skilled at finding paths through obstacles.
Strengths
- High creativity and innovation
- Long-term planning ability
- Empathy and social concern
- Constant growth and development
Weaknesses
- Easily frustrated when feeling "stuck"
- Can be too idealistic

Element Interaction Cycles
The five elements don't stand alone — they continuously interact in two main cycles:
Productive Cycle (Sheng)
Each element "gives birth to" the next:
Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood
- Wood provides fuel for Fire
- Fire produces ash that becomes Earth
- Earth stores minerals that become Metal
- Metal melts into dew that becomes Water
- Water nourishes Wood
Controlling Cycle (Ke)
Each element "controls" another:
Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood
- Wood absorbs nutrients from Earth
- Earth dams Water
- Water extinguishes Fire
- Fire melts Metal
- Metal cuts Wood
Understanding these cycles is important for relationship compatibility analysis. Elements that are productive create harmony, while elements that are controlling can create challenges.

Which Element Dominates Your Chart?
Every person has a unique combination of all five elements. Rarely is someone dominated by just one element — usually 2-3 elements stand out. The most determining factors are your Day Master element and the overall balance of your chart.
Elements that are lacking in your chart often indicate areas that need development. Elements that are excessive can be both a strength and a challenge.
