Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar in the Bazi chart — it represents the core of your personality, your fundamental identity, and how you interact with the world. Out of the 10 Heavenly Stems, your Day Master is determined by your birth day and becomes the central point of all Bazi analysis. All other elements in your chart "revolve" around this Day Master.

Why Is Day Master So Important?
In a Bazi chart consisting of four pillars (year, month, day, hour), the day pillar is the one that most represents you. The year pillar represents grandparents and childhood, the month pillar represents parents and career, the hour pillar represents children and old age.
But the day pillar — specifically its Heavenly Stem — is you. That is the Day Master (日主, Ri Zhu).
All Bazi analysis starts from the Day Master:
- 10 Gods are calculated based on how other elements relate to the Day Master
- Chart strength is determined by how much support the Day Master receives
- Beneficial elements are chosen based on what the Day Master needs to balance
Without understanding the Day Master, you cannot read a Bazi chart correctly.

Strong vs Weak Day Master
Knowing your Day Master type is not enough — you also need to know whether your Day Master is strong or weak. This determines which elements benefit or harm you.
Strong Day Master
A Day Master is considered strong when many elements in the chart support it — the same element and the element that "gives birth to it" (according to the productive cycle).
Characteristics of a strong Day Master:
- Confident, independent, has strong drive
- Can be stubborn and resistant to help
- Needs elements that "control" or "drain" for balance
Weak Day Master
A Day Master is considered weak when there is little support in the chart — more elements that control or drain it.
Characteristics of a weak Day Master:
- More adaptive, cooperative, needs support
- Can lack confidence or be too dependent on others
- Needs supporting or same-type elements for balance
Important: Weak does not mean bad, and strong does not mean good. What matters is balance. A weak Day Master that receives the right support from Luck Pillars can be very successful.
Day Master and Relationship Compatibility
Day Master also plays an important role in determining relationship compatibility. Some Day Master combinations are naturally harmonious:
- Jia (Yang Wood) + Ji (Yin Earth) — a classic strong combination
- Bing (Yang Fire) + Xin (Yin Metal) — melting and forming together
- Ren (Yang Water) + Ding (Yin Fire) — dynamic balance
Check your Day Master's compatibility with your partner on the Compatibility page.
